What is Shockwave Therapy?

Joe Penyak, PTA (Lebanon) – November 2019

Here at Robbins Rehabilitation East, we are constantly investing in revolutionary education and equipment that produces better patient outcomes. We recently purchased a Shockwave therapy unit, also commonly known as EPAT (Extracorporeal Pulse Activation Therapy). Shockwave therapy works by directing bursts of high-pressure sound waves through the skin to target the desired musculoskeletal tissue. This is an evidence-based treatment that gets to the root of your pain, facilitating healing and accelerating your recovery. Shockwave improves your body’s regenerative potential, rather than further damaging an area that has degenerated because of poor blood flow, tissue injury, overuse or weakness. I have poured through countless clinical studies and consulted with professionals around the country to ensure the safety and efficacy of this FDA approved device.

What Does Shockwave Therapy Treat?

  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Achilles tendonitis
  • Tennis and Golfers elbow
  • Adhesive capsulitis
  • Calcific tendinosis
  • Tendonitis of rotator cuff muscles
  • Patellar tendonitis
  • Bursitis
  • Shin splints
  • Iliotibial band friction syndrome
  • Lumbar and cervical spine regions
  • Chronic muscular pain
  • Many other conditions of the musculoskeletal syndrome
  • Research has also shown the ability to reduce keloid scars

What Makes Shockwave Therapy Unique?

  • Non-invasive
  • No anesthesia required
  • No risk of infection
  • No scarring
  • No downtime
  • Cost effective
  • Faster, easier healing

The benefits of Shockwave therapy are often experienced in as little as three to four treatments, but I have personally seen long lasting pain relief after one treatment. My research and consultation with other professionals show a greater than 80% success rate of patients who report significant pain reduction or becoming pain free after 4 treatment sessions. It has proven to be remarkably effective in disorders affecting the foot and ankle where oxygenated blood supply is not particularly abundant. I spoke with a clinician in Idaho recently who was able to successfully resolve a 5-year long plantar fasciitis case in which the patient received traditional physical therapy, multiple chiropractor visits, acupuncture, and massage with no results.

A typical session lasts between 5-10 minutes depending on the particular disorder being treated and will typically be administered once per week over a four-week period. Device-to-skin contact is necessary so wearing appropriate attire is recommended. We have both male and female staff members qualified to administer the treatment in a private room to ensure patient privacy and comfort.

If you have pain, give shockwave a try. The results are shocking!
